Holly Community Computer Loan Program

HCI's computer program brings technology into the homes of people with disabilities to support their educational, vocational and recreational goals. The program distributes reconditioned computers to persons with disabilities who could not otherwise obtain one. Individuals receiving computers are offered computer training as well as instruction on accessing and using the Internet.  All of the computers manufactured by Holly Community are maintained, upgraded, and replaced as part of the loan program for the life time of the loan.

Goals

  • To teach persons with disabilities a variety of computer skills that they may need.
  • To help persons with disabilities identify how they will use the computer.
  • To assist persons with disabilities to identify assistive technology and alternative techniques for using the computer
  • To increase computer literacy among those who receive a computer
  • To empower and educate those who receive a computer
  • To enable persons with disabilities to access information relating to disability and to develop an Internet peer support network.
  • To increase awareness of disability rights issues via the internet.
  • To increase quality of life for individuals who are unable to leave their homes.
Reconditioned computers are tested and available as basic models for vocational or educational goals. Students improve their reading or writing abilities. Adults improve their job skills by learning basic software or improving their typing speed. Our advanced computers are Internet ready to allow individuals to do research on their disability, do distance education, or complete college classes. Computers with games are loaned to individuals who need fun in their lives. Too many people have limited access to outside activities because of their disability: these computers offer entertainment.

HCI accepts donated new and used computers, as well as parts to be reconditioned for loan. Each donation will be acknowledged as a charitable gift and fully tax deductible.  We currently accept computers that are 1 GHz or faster.  If you are unsure of your computer’s speed a good rule of thumb is any computer that is no older than five years.

James MacNamara currently runs the computer loan program at Holly Community.  Click here to visit an informational page maintained for computer users of all types for helpful information.
